Guide to Fingerprinting in California

Follow these steps to get fingerprinted for substitute teaching.

In order to work as a substitute teacher in California, you need to undergo a state and FBI fingerprint background check. Follow the steps below to get fingerprinted.

1) Download Form 41-LS.

2) Complete the Applicant Information section on the form (see directions in screenshot below).

Notice that the first section is pre-filled, so you should not add or alter the information in that section. You will also leave the Employer Information section blank.

3) Set an appointment to get fingerprinted by a company that does digital fingerprinting. The state of California has provided a list of companies that you can search at this website: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations. Be prepared to pay for the fingerprinting when you set the appointment or when you arrive at the appointment.

4) Bring your completed Form 41-LS with you to your fingerprinting appointment. This will ensure that the fingerprinting company sends your fingerprints to the correct state agency.
